Found out my running team has a secret Snapchat group without me. I’m 26, grinding through adult night school, dead broke, and running in taped-up sneakers. Turns out the chat was created to secretly pool money to buy me high-end racing shoes. I don’t know whether to cry, be furious, or die of embarrassment.

Take a deep breath and shelve the mortification: nobody starts a secret whip-round for someone they want to freeze out. When you’re already feeling behind in life, your brain loves to twist kindness into pity. But runners are fiercely practical people. They didn't look at your taped-up shoes and see a pathetic charity case; they saw a teammate who shows up, grinds through the miles, and has so much grit that duct tape couldn't stop them. Nobody coordinates bank transfers behind someone's back unless they genuinely want that person running right next to them. Instead of crawling into a hole, look your team in the eye at the next session and say: "You're all completely unhinged, but thank you—now you've got no excuses when I dust you on the track." Swallow that prickly pride, lace them up, and run like hell. You didn't get pitied; you got backed by people who give a damn.
