I feel terrible even writing this, but my ex has been bombarding me with furious 2 AM texts about our breakup, and now half our tiny town is whispering about it. I finally confronted him, and it turns out his jealous new girlfriend stole his phone in the middle of the night just to bait me into a public fight! I’m mortified and totally shaking, what do I even do now?

Take a deep breath and drop that guilt right where you're standing: you didn’t start this dumpster fire, you just got singed by the flying sparks.
Sneaking into someone’s phone at 2 AM to pick fights with their ex isn’t just insecure—it’s full-blown soap opera villain behavior. In a small town, gossip travels faster than fiber-optic broadband, but the only person who should be red-faced here is the amateur spy lurking behind your ex’s lock screen. None of this is your fault, and you do not owe anyone an apology for being ambushed.
Your immediate move: complete radio silence. Do not reply, do not explain yourself to his girlfriend, and do not play marriage counselor. Let your ex handle the wildfire burning inside his own relationship. If mutual acquaintances dare to bring up the rumors at the grocery store, give them a bored smile and one clear line: “Oh, you’ll have to ask his girlfriend about that—she’s the one running his inbox these days.”
Block the number, put your phone on do-not-disturb, and let them star in their own low-budget drama without an audience.
