I flew 500 miles to see my boyfriend, only to spend three hours alone by the red cups while he huddled in the kitchen whispering with his ex 💀 Turns out she was bawling because she just tested positive for HPV and didn't know how to tell her new hookup, not trying to steal him back. Still, being ditched felt humiliating. Am I allowed to be mad?

Dr Gnoxx answers

Deep breath: yes, your anger is entirely justified, even if her medical freak-out was dead serious. Almost everyone who has sex encounters HPV at some point, but getting that test result can feel like the world is collapsing if nobody ever taught you how insanely common it is. Your boyfriend instinctively threw on his therapist cape—which shows he’s a decent human, but he completely flunked Boyfriend 101 by leaving you stranded as living-room wallpaper. You don't have to pretend you're thrilled about being abandoned just because someone else had a bad night. Tell him straight: "I respect that she was having a health crisis and needed a friend, but leaving me alone for three hours at a party where I knew nobody wasn't okay." Empathy for an ex is noble, but ignoring the person who booked a plane ticket to see you is pure amateur hour.
