I flew three hours on a solo trip to get over being dumped, met up with my old crush who lives here, and spent the entire dinner watching him trade frantic Snapchats with his ex. Right across the table from me. Am I even allowed to feel sick with jealousy over someone else's ex while I'm still mourning mine, or am I just completely losing the plot?
Dr Gnoxx answers
Deep breath: You aren't losing the plot, you just accidentally auditioned as an unpaid background extra in someone else's messy melodrama.
Here is what happened: Your freshly broken heart was already running on low battery, and watching your old crush obsess over his ex triggered every single raw rejection alarm you packed a suitcase to escape. You’re not genuinely jealous of his ex. You’re just deeply pissed off—and rightly so—that you were treated like furniture while someone used your dinner as a waiting room for their unresolved baggage.
The fix is gloriously simple because this trip still belongs to you. You don't need a deep post-mortem with him, and you certainly don't need to compete with a ghost on a screen. If he texts again with some half-baked apology, hit him with a simple: "Fun seeing you, but I came here to clear my head, not watch someone else’s rerun. Enjoy your week."
Leave the ghost-hunter at the table. Your solo trip starts right now, with dessert for one and zero notifications.
