I literally asked my senior manager if he felt 'truly seen in his corporate journey' over a lukewarm panino yesterday, and I wanted the floor to swallow me whole. I just started my first real office job, my social anxiety has been at an all-time high, so I’ve been memorizing those 'charismatic conversationalist' scripts from TikTok to survive small talk. But reciting influencer psycho-babble during team lunches just makes me sound like an unhinged LinkedIn bot. Now I freeze up completely before noon because I don't know who to be.

Deep breath: nobody is firing you for sounding like an aspirational podcast host over lunch, but please delete those 'executive presence' hacks immediately.
TikTok charisma coaches sell intense, cinematic dialogue because mundane reality doesn’t get views. But office small talk isn’t an existential therapy session. It’s mostly just tired adults bonding over bad coffee, weird spreadsheet bugs, and how aggressively cold the conference room is. Dropping high-concept psychological inquiries into lunch makes people suspect you’re either filming a hidden-camera prank or joining HR.
Drop the teleprompter. You don’t need to be magnetic; you just need to be comfortably basic. Next time someone sits down next to you with their tray, ditch the soul-searching and ask the lowest-stakes question imaginable: “Is the curry actually safe today, or should I stick to the sandwich?”
Real workplace camaraderie is built on shared mundane observations, not delivering a TED Talk over Tupperware.
