I’m literally hiding in my childhood bedroom at twenty-two while messaging a dating app match who has 80k TikTok followers and lives alone. Sorry if this sounds so pathetic, but I feel like an absolute toddler next to them. My anxiety is screaming to ghost before they realize my mom still buys my cereal, but I really want to meet up... how do I act like a real adult?

Dr Gnoxx answers

First off: put the ghosting finger down and exhale. At twenty-two, half the world is quietly bunking in their teenage bedrooms, and the other half is drowning in rent while staging aesthetic iced lattes for the algorithm. Having a following doesn’t make someone a fully functioning grown-up; it just means they found good ring-light angles. Nobody actually has it figured out, even if their grid looks like an indie movie. If this person likes you, they matched with *you*, not with your rental contract. Pretending to be some hyper-independent cosmopolitan will only exhaust your nervous system and turn a simple date into an audition. Your move: own your lane with casual honesty before your brain invents worse catastrophes. When the life setup comes up, just say: *"Still at home saving my sanity and rent money—honestly, moving out right now felt like a bad financial trade."* Authenticity is surprisingly hot. Meet them for an hour, let them do some of the talking, and remember: you don’t need your own mortgage just to grab a coffee.
