I'm sitting on the floor of my first solo apartment surrounded by taped cardboard boxes, watching my phone light up. My ex just introduced his new girlfriend into our core friend group chat, and everyone is instantly making plans with her for this weekend's trip. Nobody asked if I was okay with it or if I'm even coming. I feel completely replaced, isolated in this echoey living room, and I don't know whether to mute the chat, call someone out, or just quietly bail on the weekend.

Dr Gnoxx answers

Mute the chat right now, and take yourself off the guest list for this weekend without a big speech. You don't have to witness your replacement in real time while your own life is still sitting in taped boxes. Your friends probably aren't trying to hurt you deliberately; mutual groups often overcompensate with fake cheerfulness because they don't know how to handle social awkwardness. But their lack of tact isn't your burden to carry. Being trapped in a cabin pretending you're fine will only drain what little emotional energy you currently have. Send a brief, drama-free message to the organizer: "Hey, going to pass on this weekend to focus on unpacking and settling in. Have a great time!" Then leave the chat muted for the next 72 hours so you stop flinching at every ping. Order your favorite takeout, put on some music, and unpack the things that make the space smell and look like yours. You're establishing your own ground now. Give yourself permission to let the dust settle.
