I moved into my first studio three days ago. There’s barely any furniture, just a mattress on the floor and cardboard boxes, and my parents haven't called once because they didn't want me to move out. The silence here is completely eating me alive. Every evening I end up staring at Snapchat, watching my ex’s score go up and his streak stories with his friends, and I have to physically hold my hands down to stop myself from texting him to take me back. I know the breakup was right, but I feel so terrified and alone. How do I survive tonight without breaking?

Dr Gnoxx answers

Do not send that text tonight. What you are feeling right now isn't sudden clarity about your ex; it’s raw panic from the sheer, echoing quiet of an unfurnished room and family silence. An empty first apartment is an emotional shock to the system. When you don't have family warmth behind you, your brain looks for the nearest familiar anchor to stop the free-fall—even if that anchor was sinking the ship a month ago. Seeing his Snap score climb just gives your loneliness an easy, painful target to obsess over. Right now, focus purely on surviving the next two hours. Move Snapchat off your home screen or turn off notifications until tomorrow morning. Fill the physical silence immediately: turn on a loud, familiar TV show or podcast, not music. Make your mattress as soft and warm as possible with whatever blankets you have, eat something hot, and give your body permission to just feel small and scared for a night. You left that relationship and moved into this space because you are capable of building your own life. The walls are bare today, but they are yours.
