I spent four days at a lake cabin watching my boyfriend text other people right in front of me while my own messages sat on read. We’re supposed to be official, but whenever anyone asked, he went weirdly quiet or changed the subject. I felt completely invisible and humiliated in front of our whole group. Then last night his best friend drunkenly bragged to me that he stole his phone every morning just to leave me on read because they literally made a bet we’d break up before Sunday. My boyfriend swears he didn't know, but how do you not notice someone sabotaging your relationship?

First things first: take a breath and drop the idea that you’re the crazy one here. You didn't imagine being iced out—you just walked right into a shockingly petty teen movie plot, minus the laugh track. Here is the cold, hard truth: even if your boyfriend honestly didn’t orchestrate the disappearing act, letting his buddy treat your romance like a cheap poker game is pathetic. A stolen phone doesn’t explain why he turned into a silent ghost whenever anyone brought up your relationship around the campfire. That part was all him, freezing up because he cared more about looking detached in front of his bros than standing by you. Call him out in private, away from the peanut gallery. Try: "Whether you knew about the bet or not, you let your friends treat me like a joke this weekend, and you acted like you barely knew me. If you’re too scared to claim me in front of them, you don't get to have me behind closed doors." If he scrambles to protect his buddy's fragile ego instead of apologizing to you, pack your bags. You want a boyfriend, not a cowardly audience member to someone else's mean prank.
