I spent three years thinking my brain was missing a romantic chip, until some girl building cabinets on TikTok made me cry my eyes out at 2 a.m. It’s wild because I feel so relieved knowing I’m just into women and not broken, but now I’m spiraling... I'm an apprentice in a metal shop with five crude dudes. How do I even survive being myself there?

Dr Gnoxx answers

First off, take a massive breath: your romantic chip was never missing, it was just waiting for woodworking TikTok to do its thing. That huge wave of relief? That’s your nervous system finally unclenching. The sudden panic right behind it? Completely normal, but let’s hit the brakes on one major misconception: you do not owe the workshop break room a coming-out press conference. Your apprenticeship is where you learn a trade, not where you're obligated to bare your soul to guys whose conversational peak is locker-room banter. Your sexuality belongs to you, not your employer. You are allowed to take your sweet time, build a supportive circle outside the job, and test the waters only if and when you feel rock-solid. If the guys pry into your love life on Monday morning, a dry, deadpan “I’m here to bend steel, not talk about my weekends” is an impenetrable shield. Own that newfound relief—you don't have to hammer out your truth on their anvil.
