I’ve been in a calm, steady relationship for two years, but seeing my best friend holding hands with someone by the lockers today completely gutted me. I felt instantly sick and empty, and now I can't shake the feeling that I'm dating the wrong person.

Ouch. That punch to the gut has very little to do with school lockers and everything to do with emotional honesty.
Here’s the unvarnished truth: comfortable and safe is great for a winter coat, but when your best friend holding someone else's hand makes your stomach drop through the floor, your subconscious is waving a giant neon flag. It usually boils down to two things: either you’re grieving the sudden loss of your best friend's undivided orbit, or you’ve been using your quiet relationship as a cozy waiting room.
Before you drop an emotional bomb between third and fourth period, step back. Do not confess anything to your best friend while they’re riding high on a brand-new crush. Instead, look at your own relationship in the harsh daylight. Ask yourself: if your best friend vanished tomorrow, would you still choose your partner? If the honest answer is a flat, quiet no, you have your verdict.
You deserve real fireworks, and your partner deserves someone whose heart isn’t secretly parked in someone else's driveway.
