I was hosting a guy I matched with at my apartment, and out of nowhere I had this awful panic attack. I panicked and messaged my family group chat, but my mom literally sent a snap to everyone rolling her eyes, calling me dramatic and attention-seeking. I feel so humiliated. Did I ruin things with him, and what if my parents are right and I'm just making a scene?

Dr Gnoxx answers

You were not making a scene; a panic attack is a neurobiological alarm bell, not amateur theater. Your parents reacting with ridicule says everything about their emotional limits and nothing about the legitimacy of your distress. Right now, your nervous system is reeling from two separate shocks: the attack itself, and the sting of having your primary safety net laugh at you. That double-blow makes you want to apologize for taking up oxygen. Don't. For your date, keep it grounded and low-drama. A simple message works: "Hey, thanks for being so patient earlier. My body hit the panic button out of nowhere, but I'm okay now. I really enjoyed spending time with you." How he responds will tell you whether he's someone who can handle real human vulnerability. As for your family: mute that Snapchat group immediately. When people treat your genuine panic as entertainment, they lose the privilege of real-time access to your life. Breathe. You survived both the episode and their cruelty.
