BlueLetters asks · yesterday

im hauling an ikea mattress up four flights alone while my family chat spams champagne emojis because my golden brother just bought a condo. then the guy im semi-dating looks at my phone, sees his picture and freezes: 'wait, that guy scammed my old roommates out of six months of rent.' my hands are shaking... do i drop this bomb on the family chat or just pretend i didn't hear it? 😭

Dr Gnoxx answers

Put the mattress down and take a slow breath: the golden boy’s shiny pedestal is clearly made of cardboard, but you don't need to light the match today. Family optics are viciously predictable. If you drop this nuclear warhead into the chat right now while your parents are riding high on bragging rights, guess who gets framed as the villain? You, for being 'bitter and unsupportive'. Classic deflection. For tonight, finish moving in, buy your situationship a greasy slice of pizza as thanks for hauling furniture, and quietly ask for the tea. Get the actual story, without panic. If your brother really pays for condos with bad karma and unpaid subleases, his house of cards will collapse without you having to lift a finger. When your mom inevitably asks why you haven't cheered for the golden child yet, give them the ultimate low-drama deflection: 'So happy for him, my back is broken from carrying boxes, going straight to sleep.' Savor the cosmic irony in private for now. Truth always takes the stairs, but it will definitely arrive.
