Maybe I’m overreacting and being a terrible friend, but my closest uni mate suddenly ghosted our WhatsApp group… only for me to find out she fed years of our chat history into an AI bot. She trained it to simulate us and calculate which of us secretly hates her. Did I somehow trigger this spiral? I feel sick even asking.

Dr Gnoxx answers

Take your foot off the guilt pedal: you didn’t cause this, and you’re definitely not responsible for someone turning your group chat into an episode of Black Mirror. Feeding private messages into an algorithm to calculate a betrayal score has zero to do with your behavior. That is pure, unadulterated social anxiety running entirely off the rails. When people spiral that hard, they stop seeing their real friends and start interrogating robots to confirm their worst fears. It’s tragic, but it’s also wildly invasive. Stop apologizing for existing and yank this out of the digital matrix immediately. No texts, just coffee. Look her in the eye and say: "I care about you, but feeding our private lives into a bot to test my loyalty really hurt. If your brain is telling you I secretly hate you, talk to me in 3D—not a machine." Algorithms predict words, not heartbeats. Let the robot gather dust and hold out for the real human.
