My hands are shaking typing this. My ultra-conservative dad was showing me something on Discord and accidentally screenshared his second monitor—where he was in an old server pouring his heart out about struggling with being queer as a teen. The same man who made me terrified of my own identity in this tiny town. I feel sick, heartbroken, and so confused. What do I even do with this?

Take a massive breath: you are not crazy, and you are definitely not broken.
What you just witnessed is the classic, tragic paradox of the loudest critic carrying the heaviest closet door. People who violently police other people’s identities often spent their own youth being terrorized into burying theirs. That doesn't excuse the toxic fear he created in your home—not for a single second—but it does hand you a completely new map of reality: his anger was never actually about you. It was about his own unresolved ghost.
Right now, do not ambushed-confront him. Someone caught in their own deepest shame can react unpredictably and defensively, and your emotional safety comes first in a small town. Keep this knowledge tucked in your back pocket like an invisible shield. The next time he throws out a rigid, homophobic comment, look at him and remember: he’s shouting at his own reflection, not at your future.
When the time feels safe and you eventually talk, you hold the ultimate card of empathy. Until then, stand a little taller—you're already braver than he managed to be.
