My period was five days late right during my brutal first week at my new job. I was spiraling in the office bathroom every two hours, terrified, while the guy I’ve been seeing casually just opened my messages and sent low-effort snaps like nothing was wrong. This morning it finally started, and while the physical relief made me want to cry, I’m left sitting at my desk feeling totally hollow about him. How do you deal with the weird crash when a scare ends, but it reveals someone’s true colors?

You take the relief as a win, and you treat that hollow feeling as valuable data. When an emergency blows over, your nervous system suddenly has the bandwidth to process who actually stood next to you in the trench. He didn’t show up because he didn't care enough to, plain and simple. Situationships often run on low stakes until real life forces a test run, and he failed his. Don’t start an emotional debrief over Snapchat trying to get him to understand how scared you were—he won't suddenly become attentive in hindsight. Instead, let your actions match the new reality. Pull your energy back completely, get through your workday with a hot tea and ibuprofen, and let this clarity save you from wasting any more months on someone who leaves you alone when things get heavy. Your body protected you; now protect your time.
