My stomach completely flipped upside down last night by the lake, and we ended up kissing under the dock until our lips were numb. It was the most electric, magical thing that has ever happened to me, but now I’m sitting in my cabin spiraling because they're non-binary and I've always thought of myself as straight. Does this mean everything I knew about myself is a lie now? I feel like I'm supposed to instantly pick a new box to fit into, and it's terrifying me.

Breathe: you don't have to file a formal tax return on your sexual identity just because you had an incredible kiss under a dock. Here is the secret the internet often forgets: feelings come first, labels come much later—or sometimes never. Kissing someone and feeling fireworks doesn't mean your entire past was a lie. It just means you met a human being who gave you butterflies in real life, which is honestly the coolest thing that can happen at summer camp. You do not owe anyone a freshly printed badge saying exactly who you are allowed to like from now on. You're allowed to just be a person who shared a magic moment with another person. Next time you two are hanging out by the water, you can keep it totally low-pressure: "Last night was amazing, and I really like being around you—I'm just taking things one day at a time without overthinking it." Enjoy the lakeside spark and leave the filing cabinets to the accountants.
