My supervisor just reacted with a fire emoji to my 1 a.m. story, and now I can't sleep. I’m completely crushing on him, but does this mean he likes me back, or did he just cross a line that could blow up my internship?

First rule of workplace physics: late-night fire emojis from the person who signs your evaluations are combustible material.
Take a breath. You aren't getting fired for receiving an emoji, but your gut is sounding an alarm for a reason. There is a power dynamic here. When a supervisor reacts to an intern's private stories after midnight, the line between casual flattery and wildly unprofessional behavior gets blurry fast. Even if the butterflies feel intoxicating right now, you have way more to lose than he does.
Do not use this as an invitation to flirt back in the DMs. If things get messy, the intern almost always pays the price. Your best move is cool, polite indifference. Leave the reaction on read, don't bring it up at the coffee machine, and keep your interactions strictly about the work.
Enjoy the ego boost, but keep your crush in your journal and your eyes on your career. If he crosses from an emoji into actual pressure, that’s on him to answer for—not you.
