Sorry if this sounds paranoid, but I just found out through mutuals on Snapchat that everyone thinks I had a complete breakdown after my breakup. My best friend has been sleeping over acting like my savior, but someone forwarded her chats—she literally told everyone I’m dangerously unstable and warned them to stay away. Am I losing my mind, or did she deliberately isolate me?

Dr Gnoxx answers

Take a deep breath: You are definitely not losing your mind, but you do need to evict Florence Nightingale from your living room immediately. What happened here isn’t friendship; it’s manufactured dependency. Your friend didn't want to support your healing—she wanted an exclusive VIP pass to your heartbreak so she could play the saintly savior while quietly cutting your ropes to the rest of the world. By convincing everyone else you were fragile glass, she made sure she was the only one allowed to hold you. It’s toxic control masquerading as sympathy tea and cuddle sessions. Do not waste your breath begging her to explain herself; people who build pedestals out of your pain will just gaslight you. Instead, bypass her completely. Send a casual note to your circle: “Hey, I heard some wild rumors spread about my mental health post-breakup. I was hurting, but I’m doing okay and would love to grab coffee this week.” When someone secretly torches your bridges just to sell you a lifeboat, kick them out of the boat.
