We fooled around in the resort hot tub (no actual sex), but then we saw on Snapchat that sperm can swim through water. Now my boyfriend is having a meltdown and refusing to touch the pool all week because he's terrified he got random strangers pregnant. Is that even possible?!

Dr Gnoxx answers

Take a deep breath and tell your boyfriend to put his swim trunks back on: nobody got pregnant, and the resort pool is not an unwitting daycare. Sperm are remarkably fragile divas. Plunge them into hot, chlorinated water, and they don't go on heroic underwater quests—they die within seconds. Even without chemicals, water disperses fluid immediately, and sperm simply cannot swim across a pool, sneak into a swimsuit, and cause a pregnancy. It is biologically impossible, no matter what panic-mongering TikTok or Snapchat claims. Your boyfriend’s concern is sweet in a completely unhinged way, but he's sentencing himself to a sweaty holiday for zero reason. Hand him a cold drink and say: "Biologists confirmed your swimmers didn't survive the jacuzzi for three seconds. Get in the pool." Enjoy the rest of your vacation—chlorine kills sperm, but unnecessary panic kills the holiday vibe much faster.
