we’re literally on this cute beach weekend and my new guy is the sweetest, but a song came on at dinner and out of nowhere I just missed my toxic ex so intensely it made me want to cry. I feel disgusting and fake sitting across from someone so good to me while thinking about someone who treated me like dirt 🙃

Dr Gnoxx answers

You’re not fake, and you don’t secretly want your ex back—your nervous system just got hijacked by a sensory trigger. Emotional abuse creates intense chemical highs and lows, and your brain doesn't instantly forget that chaotic wiring just because you're finally safe and happy. Missing the intensity of an old relationship isn't a sign that your new partner is wrong for you. It's actually very common: when your body finally relaxes on a nice trip, lingering trauma often finds the quiet space to surface. You don’t miss the person who hurt you; you’re experiencing emotional muscle memory. Take a slow breath, wash your hands with cold water in the restroom to ground yourself in the present, and look at your new partner when you get back to the table. Notice three real things about him right now—his laugh, his kindness, the way he looks at you. You don't need to confess every intrusive thought. Forgive yourself for having a human nervous system, and let yourself enjoy the calm love you actually chose.
