We’re on a weekend trip and my crush casually asks to grab my phone to message a restaurant from my Insta because their battery is low. I completely froze because my archived DMs and drafts are a biohazard. Why do people act like handing over your unlocked life is totally casual? How do I say no without looking like I'm running a cartel?

You do not have to hand your unlocked phone to anyone, crush or not. Wanting privacy isn’t proof of guilt—it’s normal self-preservation.
An Instagram account hasn't been a neutral messaging app for years; it’s an archive of past flirts, half-written diary drafts, and unhinged memes. When someone asks for direct access, your brain reacts like they just asked to read your personal diary over appetizers. The trick is to separate the errand from the device so you don't look defensive.
Next time, keep physical custody of the phone and handle the task yourself in one smooth motion: “I’m weirdly neurotic about people holding my phone, but tell me what to ask and I’ll DM them right now.” Or simply hand them a charger and look up the menu together on your screen while you hold it.
Boundaries feel suspicious only when you treat them like a guilty secret. Own your quirk, keep your drafts locked down, and go enjoy dinner.
