we’ve been best friends forever and decided this road trip would be our test run for dating, maybe an open thing. but every night at the motel or campsite, when it’s finally quiet and i actually want to connect, their face is just glowing from discord drama they have to moderate. am i expecting too much romantic depth too fast, or are they hiding behind their phone because this transition is scaring them too?

They are almost certainly hiding behind that screen. Shifting a lifelong friendship into romantic territory is high-stakes emotional terrain, and moderating a chat server offers a predictable sense of control right when your real-life dynamic feels uncharted.
You layered a lot onto this trip: a massive relationship pivot, the question of non-monogamy, and the pressure of enclosed spaces. When vulnerability spikes, people retreat to where they feel competent. Discord isn't necessarily more interesting than you; it is simply safer than facing the awkward, tender reality of looking at your best friend as a lover.
Take the pressure off the late-night talks. Tomorrow while you’re driving and don’t have to make intense eye contact, propose a tangible boundary: "Tonight at the campsite, can we do sixty minutes with our phones in the glove compartment? Just us, even if we’re just sitting quietly." That gives them a defined container instead of an open-ended emotional test.
Transitioning a friendship is inherently clumsy work. Give the awkwardness permission to exist out in the open.
