We’ve only been seeing each other for three weeks and she just asked for my WhatsApp live location 24/7 so she doesn’t “get paranoid” when we hang out with the rest of the rowing team? I was about to tap share because I really like her, but suddenly my chest felt completely tight. Is this what modern dating is now, or am I basically putting an ankle monitor on myself just to keep the peace?

Dr Gnoxx answers

Deep breath: hit cancel immediately. That tight chest of yours is your gut screaming what your brain is trying to rationalize. Demanding a 24/7 digital leash isn’t relationship security—it’s an electronic ankle monitor disguised as commitment. If someone needs round-the-clock GPS tracking to feel okay about you existing in the same boat club as other human beings, the problem isn’t your whereabouts; it’s an absolute lack of trust before things have even properly started. Surrendering your privacy won't cure her jealousy, it will only feed it until you're apologizing for grocery shopping. Keep your location off and set the boundary before practice tomorrow. Try this: “I really like you and want this to work, but 24/7 tracking doesn't work for me. Trust has to come from us, not an app.” If she rows away over that, let her. You’re looking for a partner, not a parole officer.
